Marriage Registration & Certificate in Gurugram & Delhi

Marriage registration converts a wedding that has already taken place into a government record and a certificate you can use for visas, passports, banking and immigration. In Gurugram it runs under the Haryana Registration of Marriages Act 2008; in Delhi under the Compulsory Registration of Marriage Order 2014. Both are far quicker than court marriage.

Registration is not the same as court marriage

This is the distinction that trips up almost everyone, so it is worth being blunt about it.

 Court marriageMarriage registration
When it appliesYou are not married yetYour wedding already happened
What it doesCreates the marriageRecords an existing marriage

If you had a wedding — temple, gurudwara, church, nikah, Arya Samaj, banquet hall, anything — you are already married in the eyes of the law. What you are missing is the paper. That is a registration job, and it is the faster of the two routes.

How it works in Gurugram and the rest of Haryana

Haryana registers marriages under the Haryana Registration of Marriages Act, 2008 and its rules. The application is filed online through the state’s marriage registration portal on the e-Disha platform, after which both spouses and two witnesses appear before the Registrar of Marriages for the area.

  • Who the Registrar is. In urban Gurugram it is an officer of the Municipal Corporation Gurugram; in rural areas of the district it is the Gram Panchayat Secretary or the Tehsildar, depending on where the marriage took place or where you live.
  • The 90-day rule. The Act expects registration within 90 days of the wedding. Applying later is still allowed but attracts a late fee and, past a point, an additional affidavit and approval from a higher officer. This is the main reason a straightforward Gurugram registration turns into a three-week one.
  • Aadhaar verification. Both spouses and both witnesses are verified through Aadhaar-linked details at the appointment. Mismatched names between Aadhaar and other documents are the most frequent cause of rejection.
  • The certificate. Once approved it is generated on the portal and can be downloaded and verified online, which is what embassies and banks want to see.

How it works in Delhi

Delhi runs on the Delhi (Compulsory Registration of Marriage) Order, 2014, administered by the Revenue Department. You apply through the Delhi e-District portal, pick an appointment slot at the SDM office of the district where either spouse lives or where the marriage was solemnised, and attend with two witnesses.

Delhi also offers a Tatkal facility for urgent cases, where a complete file verified at the counter can be registered the same day on payment of a higher fee. It is a genuine government facility, not a private shortcut — see our Tatkal page for what it does and does not cover.

Documents you will need

  • Proof of age for both spouses — birth certificate, Class X certificate, passport or driving licence
  • Proof of address for both — Aadhaar, voter ID, passport, utility bill or rent agreement
  • Photo identity for both — Aadhaar, PAN, passport, voter ID
  • Proof that the wedding happened — this is the one people forget. Wedding invitation card, photographs of the ceremony, and a certificate from the priest, temple, gurudwara, church or Qazi who solemnised it
  • Passport-size photographs of each spouse, plus a joint photograph
  • Two witnesses with their own photo ID and address proof — typically people who attended the wedding
  • Divorce decree, or the death certificate of a former spouse, if either of you was married before
  • For a foreign national: passport, valid visa, and a No Impediment or single-status certificate from their embassy

Our full documents checklist breaks this down by situation, including what changes for NRIs, divorcees and inter-faith couples.

What the certificate is actually for

Couples often treat registration as a formality to do "some day". It usually becomes urgent at the worst possible moment. The certificate is the document that unlocks:

  • Spouse and dependant visas, and permanent-residence applications
  • Changing a surname on a passport, PAN, Aadhaar or bank record
  • Adding a spouse to insurance, pensions, PF nominations and company benefits
  • Joint home loans and joint property registration
  • Proving succession and inheritance rights if something happens to one of you
  • Any consular or immigration process abroad, where an unregistered marriage effectively does not exist

If the certificate is going overseas it will usually also need apostille or embassy attestation, which is a separate step through the Ministry of External Affairs.

Questions people ask

How long does marriage registration take in Gurugram?

A complete file filed within 90 days of the wedding is typically registered in about one to three weeks, depending on appointment availability at the Registrar of Marriages. Older marriages take longer because of the late-registration affidavit and approval.

Is marriage registration compulsory in India?

Yes in practical terms. Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh all have compulsory registration rules, and the Supreme Court in Seema v. Ashwani Kumar directed all states to make registration of marriages compulsory. More importantly, without it you cannot prove the marriage to a bank, embassy or passport office.

We got married ten years ago. Can we still register?

Yes. There is no cut-off. You will need an affidavit explaining the delay, a late fee, and stronger proof that the wedding took place — the invitation card, photographs and a solemnisation certificate matter more the older the marriage is.

Do both of us have to be physically present?

Yes, at the appointment before the Registrar. Both spouses and both witnesses attend in person and are verified. There is no fully remote route to a marriage certificate in Haryana or Delhi.

Can we register in Gurugram if we married somewhere else?

Usually yes, if at least one of you resides in the district. The Registrar for the place of residence can register a marriage solemnised elsewhere, though for some older marriages the office may prefer the place of solemnisation. Tell us where the wedding happened and where you live now and we will confirm which office to file at.

What if our names are spelled differently on different documents?

Fix it before you apply. A mismatch between Aadhaar, the wedding card and a passport is the single most common reason a registration is rejected at the counter. Depending on the discrepancy the fix is an affidavit, a gazette notification, or a correction to the underlying record.
