Delhi (Compulsory Registration of Marriage) Order, 2014
Marriage Registration in Delhi — SDM Offices & Tatkal
Delhi registers marriages under the Compulsory Registration of Marriage Order, 2014, through the e-District portal and an appointment at the SDM office of the relevant district. Delhi is also the only jurisdiction in NCR with a genuine Tatkal facility for same-day registration of an already-solemnised marriage.
- SDM of the district (Revenue Department)
- Delhi e-District portal
How Delhi is organised
Delhi has eleven revenue districts, each with SDM sub-divisions, and your file goes to the SDM for the district where either spouse resides or where the marriage was solemnised. Getting this right matters because appointment slots are district-specific.
- New Delhi — Connaught Place, Chanakyapuri, Karol Bagh
- Central — Daryaganj, Karol Bagh, Paharganj
- South — Saket, Hauz Khas, Defence Colony, Mehrauli
- South East — Kalkaji, Defence Colony, Sarita Vihar
- South West — Dwarka, Najafgarh, Kapashera, Vasant Vihar
- West — Rajouri Garden, Punjabi Bagh, Patel Nagar
- North West — Rohini, Saraswati Vihar, Kanjhawala, Model Town
- North — Civil Lines, Sadar Bazar, Narela
- North East — Seelampur, Yamuna Vihar, Karawal Nagar
- East — Preet Vihar, Gandhi Nagar, Mayur Vihar
- Shahdara — Seemapuri, Vivek Vihar, Shahdara
The Tatkal facility
Delhi offers a Tatkal option for urgent cases: a complete, verified file can be registered the same day on payment of a higher government fee. It is a real facility of the Revenue Department, not a private arrangement, and you get a receipt for the fee.
Tatkal applies only to registration of a marriage that has already been solemnised. It cannot shorten the 30-day notice period for a Special Marriage Act court marriage, because that period is written into the statute. Anyone offering a same-day court marriage under the SMA is describing something else.
Full detail on what qualifies is on the Tatkal page.
Step by step in Delhi
- Register on the e-District portal and complete the marriage registration application for both spouses.
- Upload documents — age proof, address proof, identity, photographs and proof of solemnisation.
- Book the appointment at the SDM office for the correct district. Slots move quickly; book before finalising travel.
- Attend in person with your spouse and two witnesses, carrying originals and two sets of self-attested copies.
- Verification and issue. On a normal application the certificate follows within days; under Tatkal, the same day if nothing is queried.
Court marriage in Delhi
A court marriage under the Special Marriage Act is filed with the Marriage Officer — in practice the SDM or ADM of a district where one of you has lived for 30 continuous days. Notice, a 30-day objection window, then solemnisation before three witnesses. Delhi Marriage Officers handle a high volume of these, including for inter-faith couples and couples where one party is a foreign national.
Where we appear
SDM offices across all eleven Delhi districts, and the district courts at Tis Hazari, Patiala House, Saket, Karkardooma, Rohini and Dwarka for protection petitions and related matters.

Questions about Delhi
Which SDM office do we go to in Delhi?
The SDM of the district where either spouse resides, or where the marriage was solemnised. Appointment slots are booked per district on the e-District portal, so identify the right one before you apply.
Can we get a marriage certificate the same day in Delhi?
Yes for registration of an already-solemnised marriage, through the Tatkal facility, if the file is complete and consistent. No for a Special Marriage Act court marriage, which has a mandatory 30-day notice period.
How much does marriage registration cost in Delhi?
The ordinary government fee is nominal; the Tatkal fee is substantially higher. Both are set by the Delhi Government and revised periodically, so we quote against the current notified schedule and give you the receipt.
How many witnesses do we need in Delhi?
Two for registration. Three for a Special Marriage Act court marriage.
Do both spouses have to attend?
Yes. Both spouses and both witnesses appear in person at the SDM office. There is no remote route.
