Haryana Registration of Marriages Act, 2008

Marriage Registration in Gurugram (Gurgaon)

Marriage registration in Gurugram runs under the Haryana Registration of Marriages Act, 2008. You apply online through the state portal and then appear with your spouse and two witnesses before the Registrar of Marriages — the Municipal Corporation for urban Gurugram, the Tehsildar or Panchayat Secretary for rural areas of the district.

  • Registrar of Marriages, Municipal Corporation Gurugram
  • Haryana marriage registration portal (e-Disha)

Which office handles your file

Haryana does not have a single marriage registrar for the whole district. Which officer registers your marriage depends on where you live or where the wedding took place:

  • Urban Gurugram — an authorised officer of the Municipal Corporation Gurugram acts as Registrar of Marriages. This covers most of the sectors, the Golf Course Road and Sohna Road belts, DLF, Sushant Lok, Palam Vihar and New Gurugram.
  • Manesar and the Municipal Corporation Manesar area — the corresponding officer for that corporation.
  • Rural Gurugram district — the Gram Panchayat Secretary or the Tehsildar for the relevant tehsil: Gurugram, Sohna, Pataudi, Manesar or Farrukhnagar.

Filing at the wrong office is a wasted appointment. If you live in one tehsil and married in another, tell us both and we will confirm which counter your file belongs at.

The 90-day rule, and what happens after it

The Haryana Act expects a marriage to be registered within 90 days of solemnisation. Inside that window it is straightforward paperwork. Outside it:

  • A late fee applies, increasing with the delay
  • An affidavit explaining the delay is required from both spouses
  • Beyond a certain period, approval from a higher officer is needed and the file is scrutinised more closely
  • Proof that the wedding actually happened matters much more — the invitation card, ceremony photographs and the priest’s or Qazi’s certificate carry real weight

Old marriages are registered in Gurugram all the time. It simply takes longer and needs a properly built file rather than a walk-in.

Step by step in Gurugram

  1. Online application on the Haryana marriage registration portal, with both spouses’ and both witnesses’ details entered exactly as they appear on Aadhaar.
  2. Document upload — age proof, address proof, identity, photographs, and proof of solemnisation.
  3. Appointment before the Registrar of Marriages, attended in person by both spouses and both witnesses.
  4. Aadhaar-based verification at the counter for all four people.
  5. Approval and certificate, generated on the portal and downloadable, with online verification available — which is what embassies and banks want.
The commonest reason a Gurugram file is rejected

A name that does not match across Aadhaar, the wedding invitation and the age proof. Not a missing document — a mismatched one. Reconcile the spellings before you book the appointment.

Court marriage in Gurugram

If you are not married yet and want a civil marriage, that is a court marriage under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, filed with the Marriage Officer for the district — not with the municipal Registrar. It carries the statutory 30-day notice period and needs three witnesses rather than two.

Couples who are both Hindu, Buddhist, Jain or Sikh and want to move faster often use an Arya Samaj ceremony followed by registration under the Hindu Marriage Act, which has no notice period.

Questions about Gurugram

How long does marriage registration take in Gurugram?

A complete file within 90 days of the wedding is usually registered in about one to three weeks, subject to appointment availability. Older marriages take longer because of the late-registration affidavit and approval.

Where is the marriage registration office in Gurugram?

For urban Gurugram, the Registrar of Marriages sits with the Municipal Corporation Gurugram. Rural parts of the district register with the Gram Panchayat Secretary or the Tehsildar for that tehsil. Which one applies depends on where you live or married.

Can we register in Gurugram if we married in Delhi or another state?

Usually yes, if at least one of you resides in Gurugram district. For some older marriages the office may prefer the place of solemnisation, so it is worth confirming before you apply.

How many witnesses are needed in Gurugram?

Two, both present in person with their own Aadhaar and address proof. A Special Marriage Act court marriage needs three.

Is Tatkal same-day registration available in Gurugram?

The Tatkal facility is a Delhi Government scheme. Haryana runs its own system, which can be quick with a clean file but does not have an identical same-day premium counter.
